Sprinkler Systems in Dubuque?

HBAI Executive Director Jay Iverson and four HBAI presidents –  Mike Farr (2002), Tari Dailey (2011), Glenn Siders (2012), and Drew Retz (2014) attended the membership meeting of the independent Dubuque Homebuilders and Associates meeting Tuesday night.  The Dubuque fire marshall was present to talk about residential sprinkler systems.

The Dubuque Homebuilders group has a very cohesive and loyal membership.  Over 70 members gathered for this particular monthly membership meeting.  Only a handful of them are members of HBAI and NAHB – so if you do business with any of them please encourage the non-believers to bring their talents to our table as well as their local group.  It only makes sense.

2002 HBAI President Mike Farr (Cascade Manufacturing) visits with Dubuque Fire Chief Dan Brown.  Standing in the background is Dubuque Fire Marshal Mark Ludescher who gave an excellent talk on the benefits of sprinkler systems.  When all was said and done, both leaders do not see mandated sprinkler systems in the foreseeable future.

Office Furniture and Goodies for Sale

As we work on moving into our new office location, we have a number of items for sale.  We would rather they go to our members if needed and after that opportunity we’ll put them on Craigslist.  Photos will be available shortly, but for the purpose of this article we have:

A complete oak office set which includes a pair of four drawer file cabinets, a hutch with a desk and plenty of storage, and two sofa tables that match.  It’s pretty nice, we paid $1,500 for it back in the day.  We also have a couple of nice sofa tables, wall hangings, three black metal file cabinets, two yellow lateral file cabinets, and a bunch of other desks and file cabinets which will be more towards the free level.  Email Jay Iverson if any of that sounds of interest at this time.

Biggert-Waters Act – Rates Gone Up?  We Need Documentation

Parts of Iowa are affected – there have been numerous reports of dramatic premium increases being charged for flood insurance, along with questions and concerns about the effects of the Biggert-Waters flood insurance legislation, which passed in 2012.

In discussions with Congress and FEMA, NAHB has been asked to show “quantitative proof” of drastic rate increases caused by the Biggert-Waters Act. If you, or someone you know, can share copies of old policy bills/letters and current insurance bills with increased rates it would assist our cause here in Washington.  Congress appears ready and willing to act, and NAHB needs to respond with documented rate increase information.

If you have any questions regarding this request or have information to provide, please contact Kedrin Simms Brachman at 800-368-5242 x8413.
